National Basketball League clubs will have to wait until next week to find out if they will be part of the competition next season.

The NBL was due to make an announcement this week, but a spokesman says the Commissioner is still finalising licence agreements.

Most of the interest revolves around bids for new teams in Sydney and Brisbane, while the Cairns Taipans are still working to meet the league's financial requirements.

Despite leading the Milwaukee Bucks into playoffs contention and earning the NBA Player of the Week award, Andrew Bogut is not guaranteed to play for Australia in the FIBA World Championships later this year.

Bogut is in the midst of a stellar year in his fifth season in the NBA, averaging career highs in points, rebounds and blocks per game.

His Bucks are currently ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 36-29 record and are on track to make their first postseason appearance since the year Bogut was drafted in 2005-06.

He was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after Milwaukee went on a 3-0 run between March 8 and 14.

The two-time Olympian averaged 19.3 points, 13.7 rebounds, 3.7 blocked shots, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game over the week.

Australian Boomers head coach Brett Brown is keen to name the dominant centre in his line-up for the World Championships, which tip off in Turkey in late August, but Bogut's health and contractual obligations may stand in the way.

The 25-year-old missed 46 games - more than half of last season - in 2008/09 with a back injury, and Brown said Bogut has raised that as a concern.

"He's been fantastic in regards to communicating with me [about the national program]," he said.

"He's been very candid about his situation at the moment being up in the air, we're not sure how his back is going to hold up.

"[Basketball Australia] are trying to do everything we can to help him with resources with our strength and conditioning coaches that he's comfortable with.

"Anything that we can do to get him with the team is our main focus. He is the crown and jewel of our Boomer program and we really hope we can have him with us."

He said the strain of the 82-game NBA season, plus a potential playoffs campaign stretching until June at the longest, may just be too much to ask of Bogut.

"His performance and his statistics to date are positives but it's a long season for him," he said.

"I really want to coach him and I hope that we can have him with us.

"That final decision is going to be Andrew's and we support him in that decision. He is passionate about representing Australia and helping his team-mates get to a higher level on the world stage.

"He's got some decisions to make like all these NBA players that play eight or nine months in a row."

The Nicholls State University men's basketball team (0-1) overcame a ten-point first half deficit to take a 36-33 halftime lead, but a 21-7 second-half run by Duquesne (1-0) gave the host Dukes an 85-62 win in the season opener for both teams and spoil Nicholls' hopes for an upset in Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Nicholls was led by junior guard/forward Anatoly Bose, who totaled 23 points on 35.0 percent shooting (7-for-20, 4-for-12 from three-point range), and sophomore guard Fred Hunter who posted 12 points and a team-high 7 rebounds in Nicholls first-ever contest against a current member of the Atlantic 10.

Saint Louis University freshman forward Cody Ellis (Perth, Australia / A.I.S.) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for the period ending Feb. 27. The honor is Ellis' first of his Billiken career.

Over three games, Ellis averaged 14.3 ppg while shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from 3-point range and 81.8 percent from the line. He began the week by hitting four 3-pointers, both free throw attempts and finished with 14 points at Massachusetts as the Billikens won their third straight road contest. He sank half his shots against Xavier and all seven free throws to finish with 19 points, his second-highest total of the season. To close out the week, Ellis made two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points in the victory over Duquesne.

The Billikens (19-9, 10-4 A-10) welcome nationally ranked Temple to Chaifetz Arena Wednesday, March 3, in a 7 p.m. game. The contest is the final regular season home game for the Billikens.
