Junior guard/forward Anatoly Bose was named first team All-Southland and sophomore guard/forward Fred Hunter picked up honorable mention honors as the Southland Conference named its 2010 All-Southland Men's Basketball Teams on Tuesday.

Bose earned first team accolades after averaging 20.4 points/game during the regular season.
NBL 2010/11 club licence decisions?

Quote

National Basketball League clubs will have to wait until next week to find out if they will be part of the competition next season.

The NBL was due to make an announcement this week, but a spokesman says the Commissioner is still finalising licence agreements.

Most of the interest revolves around bids for new teams in Sydney and Brisbane, while the Cairns Taipans are still working to meet the league's financial requirements.

I'm still not sure Sydney works for me, unless they have some new model that guarantees a fan base e.g. attached to the Sydney Swans or something. I'm not sure how a Sydney team can survive.

Brisbane and Cairns have a great supporter base's, its a shame Cairns did not have a good season this year.

I'd actually like to see a second team from New Zealand. Imagine a NZ derby game in the NBL. Maybe even a team that plays in various cities e.g. Wellington, Christchurch etc

Saint Mary’s men’s basketball lost a heart breaker to Vanderbilt, 70-72, making the Gaels 2-1 this season. In a fast paced game, full of fouls and lead changes, the Gaels and Commodores fought till the last second.
At the last second, Clint Steindl pump-faked and side-stepped on the right hand baseline, and narrowly missed a 3-point attempt. Omar Samhan’s put back was just after the buzzer as the Gaels lost at home for the first time this season.

Andrew Ogilvy Watch 2009/2010

Now AJ has recovered from a concussion from a few weeks ago, he is really starting to put up numbers that will make some people stand up and pay attention. He has fully recovered from all the injuries from last year and is moving very, very well. He may be a little short of conditioning but that is about it.

Stallings still has no clue how to use AJ - and none of the guards know how to pass to the post, but being healthy AJ just keeps working until they can't help give him the ball.

Tonight he is destroying the Missouri Tigers. He has 22+ pts, a bunch of rebounds, set some screens, ran the court, took some charges and there is still 7 minutes to go. Assuming he still gets the ball this should really be a 30pt night. With the way Stallings coaches and the guards pass there is really no guarantee that will happen. Like right now - AJ has 25 and is killing people and he gets subbed out for a 'rest' and Missouri go on a little run. It went from a 15pt game to 5 pt game while AJ has been out.

Basically AJ does all the same things Bogut does for the Bucks but he does them a little quicker to make up for being a little shorter and he is a little more mobile. Still has a horrid hitch in his shot. Hopefully he can stay healthy all year.

Trade Rumours, Free agency, Off Season Rumours

One trade that is done should help our Patty Mills get more minutes off the bench.

Updates...

* Camby deal for Blake and Outlaw is done (Patty Should Get More Minutes). Clippers are also waving Ricky Davis.
* Cavs renewing conversations with Wizards for Jamison. Maybe they feel like the Stoudemire deal's a no-go.
* San Antonio pushing for McDyess to be dealt so they can ultimately make an offer for Tyrus Thomas.
* Chicago offered Thomas and Deng to Minnesota for Al Jefferson- Minnesota's not interested.
* Clippers offered Chris Kaman to Detroit, who's also not interested.
* Looks like if the TMac trade to NY happens it's for Hughes, not Harrington, contrary to my original report.
* Richard Dumas looking to catch on with a team (just making sure you're reading all these:)

http://is.gd/8x5D4 i like this option for us Boston Celtics.

Celtics Get: PG DJ Augustin, C Tyson Chandler, and PF Boris Diaw

Augustin brings youth to the back court and could be used alongside
Rajon Rondo, taking advantage of the speed rather than worrying about
size. Boston knows exactly what they're getting in Tyson Chandler, a
defensive threat who provides little on the other end. Boris Diaw seems
to be still trying to find himself. Boston would love to mold him into
a more well-rounded player.

Bobcats Get: SG Ray Allen, PF Glen Davis, and SG Tony Allen

Charlotte is looking at the playoffs for the first time as a
franchise whilst trying to sell the team. Assembling a potent team and
advancing to the second round of the playoffs would certainly make the
team more enticing to prospective buyers. Adding the shooting skill of
Ray Allen might push the team in the right direction. Davis would fill
Diaw's spot and has proven that, when given a chance, he can make an
impact on the first team. With the expiring deals of both Ray and Tony
Allen, the new ownership will have flexibility to make a bigger
addition next season.

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team said their goodbye’s to a pair out outstanding senior athletes Saturday evening at McKeon Pavilion, as Omar Samhan and Ben Allen played their final game in front of the home crowd. The pair did not disappoint as they combined for 45 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Gaels to an 88-80 win over visiting Loyola Marymount.

Samhan was particularly dominant, as he tied his career-high with 33 points, on 14-of-22 shooting. In doing so, Samhan now has 623 points on the season, breaking Eric Schraeder’s single season record of 614 set in 1998-99 season. He also moved past David Vann (1978-82) for second all-time with 1,745 career points. Samhan added with eight rebounds and three blocked shots, improving school record to 243 blocks.

The Perth Wildcats may have won the minor premiership, but they only did it by 1 game over the other teams in the top 4. The Wildcats probably have the best depth in the league, they have 2 or 3 players that can come off the bench and score in bunches.

But this will not worry the Gold Coast Blaze who have won 3 out of their 4 meetings with the Wildcats this season, including a win on the Wildcats home court.

David Andersen Watch Watch 2009/10

Good shooting night - but more importantly David got enough minutes to be effective.

19 pts, 6 reb and some good defense of Bynum and Lamar Odom. Played basically all of the 2nd and 4th quarter including down the stretch.

Shot the ball well - still more comfortable one step in from the 3pt line, but if they are going in from there so be it. Took a nice charge against Bynum - should have flopped a couple of times instead of trying to hold his ground against the much bigger Bynum but overall he played pretty good D.

He shot a couple of nasty airballs as well - seems to be how he shoots though. It either goes right in or it really doesn't. Not a whole lot of inbetween tonight anyway.

Great win for the Rockets. Lakers just didn't have it tonight.

Chicago Bulls

Just watched the Bulls choke a 19 point lead to a Detroit team that is really far from its best basketball and just gliding on auto-pilot.
Given the enormous talent that there is in the Bulls roster and massive depth would it be almost unforgivable if they didn't make the conference finals? With the aquisition of Big Ben this team was supposed to have no weaknesses, but just look at them getting smashed by Detroit.

Lets also consider this- they will be relayed ANOTHER very high pick again nest season making them one of the most talented rosters going around which beckons the question; why can't they put it together? My answer is "too many cooks spoil the broth.." Chicago has too much talent and need to off-load some to get some role players that can help some of their youngsters develop as well as fix the weaknesses that they have.

An obvious one is Kirk Hinrich who seem's to have lost the ability to pass this season, or at least pass with the effectiveness he did last season. Duhon hardly sees court time and Gordon, well he is now a true SG so no passing for him. Maybe it's time they offload Hinrich and Nocioni and try and pick up a Billups or even try and aquire someone with immediate impact like Oden or that other guy who'll go 1 or 2.

So what do you reckon? Am I being to harsh on the YOUNG bulls or should they start the cull now and if so make some suggestions where they should improve.

Ater Majok Watch 2009/10

He is getting alot of press at the moment, seams like ppl in USA realy think Majok will be something specail.

Quote

Ater Majok will be worked into UConn practices on a limited basis. He practiced for the first time Thursday since sustaining a stress fracture of the left tibia a few weeks ago. Majok was to practice 45 minutes, with his workload increasing by the day.

Majok won't be eligible to play until December, so UConn might limit how much he is involved.

"I would have prefered, by today if he didn't have the stress fracture, that I would have had him do everything in the first 10 practices in the regular rotation, then ween him out," coach Jim Calhoun said. "Once we get to games, we won't have time enough to spend as much time with him."

Until UConn gets Majok in uniform, the Huskies will be shorthanded up front with Alex Oriakhi, Gavin Edwards and Charles Okwandu handling the duties. Right now, Stanley Robinson leads the team in blocked shots in practice -- and that's not a good thing.

"We could have a lineup, theoretically, of Gavin, Stanley, Jamal Coombs and two guards -- small and slight," Calhoun said. "When we get Ater back after the first nine games, then we have some legitimate size again. But right now, that's a concern of ours. If we get into a game with LSU, get into a game with whoever it might be, and we run into a size issue, that's going to be a problem. As it plays its way out, you start thinking and preparing for the things that can happen -- injuries, foul situation -- that's one reason we've put the press in."

Asked about tempo, Calhoun said, "I don't know if we can get into a 50-shot game. I think it's got to be a 60-70 shot game where some of our inexperience won't show and some of our quickness will show."

Quote

Ater Majok, a 6-10 center originally from the Sudan, is practicing with the team and will be eligible to play his first game Dec. 20 against Central Florida.

"At 6-10 with a 7-foot-7 reach, he's going to make a major splash in our league," head coach Jim Calhoun said.

Quote

“(Neither) of those guys are natural shot-blockers,” Calhoun added. “Our best shot-blockers are Stanley, one, Gavin, two. When Ater gets eligible, he’s probably our best shot-blocker.”

Ah yes, Ater Majok, the 6-11 forward out of Australia. Once he’s eligible to play, Majok will give the Huskies a long, talented, athletic presence up front. But Majok — who just started practicing after battling a stress fracture in his left tibia — won’t be eligible to play until Dec. 20.

“The best of the five new guys would be Ater right now,” Calhoun said. “He’s only played five days, but he’s very talented — more talented than I thought he was. He doesn’t necessarily know how to play yet. He could desperately need a game like this. There was a time when you could play two exhibition games and sit out the rest of the time.”

NBL Semi Final 2 | Wollongong Hawks vs Townsville Crocodiles

The Wollongong Hawks have been the fairytale story of the 2009/10 NBL campaign. This time last year we where all saying goodbye to the Hawks, but from the ashes has come a team that has shocked everyone and until they were hit by injuries were considered real favourites to win the championship. They also have a rich white knight who has put a cash bonus on the table if they can win the championship.

The Townsville Crocs are a team that has almost gone under the Radar this season. They have the best collection of NBL characters in Corey (Homicide)Williams and Russell Hinder and they always leave it all out on the court. If they can win game 1 in Wollongong they will be confident in closing out the series as the Hawks away record this year has not been good.

Larry Sengstock Q&A

The Chief Executive Officer of Basketball Australia recently took time out to answer some questions about the NBL Finals, the possible return of the Sydney Kings, the make-up of the competition next season and a range of other hot topics for NBL fans.

Sports Tonight carried the news last night that the Sydney Kings would be back next year. Can you confirm they will be back in the competition?

Larry Sengstock: It’s a little premature to say that they will definitively be back, as there are still some hurdles to clear, but what I can confirm is that we have been in serious negotiations for some time with a group to bring back an NBL team to Sydney. That group does hold the intellectual property rights to the Kings brand name and they have been very positive in all our discussions thus far. Is it a done deal that they will be back? No. Am I feeling confident they will be back next season? I am confident but we still have some work to do.

What are the hurdles that need to be cleared?

We’re currently finalising the license agreement for teams who want to participate next season to sign, but there have been some delays in that process that have seen slippage in our original timeline. We’ve had the majority of our clubs ask for some last minute amendments to clauses within that agreement and there has been a negotiation process that we are still going through to make the necessary adjustments. Until the license agreement is finalised and signed by the groups that have expressed interest in being part of the 2010/11 season, we can’t make the decision on which teams are in for next season. Until we know that, we also can’t finalise broadcast negotiations, so there is a knock-on effect.

What areas of the license agreement are being changed and has that meant a change to the financial criteria such as the $1M guarantee and $500,000 working capital?

It’s mainly over the Intellectual Property rights for the clubs, and how they are to be leased to the NBL during the term of the license agreement. It is a very comprehensive and necessarily complicated agreement so it’s not surprising that there has had to be a great deal of discussion to get to the point where everyone is comfortable. The financial criteria however -has not been compromised in any way, and that is critically important. To go through an independent review process, as we did, and then discard their key recommendation for those financial criteria would have been ludicrous and was never entertained by the BA Board.

If the financial criteria is remaining in place, what does that mean to a team like Cairns, who have publicly said they will struggle to meet it?

Our goal has always been to ensure that the NBL and its clubs have the sort of stability it has lacked in recent years. That means no more teams going broke mid-season and damaging the NBL brand. The NBL Commission will ultimately look at the submissions from clubs for next season and scrutinise all elements of their application. That includes things like their community engagement plans and their long-term business plans, as well as all their projected budgets and detailed financial data. The NBL Commission will then report to the BA Board with recommendations for teams that should be issued with a license for 2010/11 based on all that data. With Cairns in particular, we understand they currently have an issue with one component of our criteria in the working capital. We’ve asked them to submit to us how they expect to do so in the near future. Ultimately however it is up to all clubs to prove to the Board’s satisfaction that they are financially sound, and any club that can’t do so shouldn’t expect to be issued with a license for next season.

How important is it to have teams in Sydney and Brisbane next season?

Very important. We need to have teams in all the major cities as soon as possible and we are working hard to achieve this. It is extremely important for the NBL in taking the next step in a range of areas.

What chance is there of a second Melbourne team being in place for next season?

I think there is no doubt that Melbourne is the one marketplace in Australia that could definitely support a second team but again the timing needs to be right. We’ve had serious and detailed discussions with a promising group that wants to launch a second Melbourne team but it appears more likely that they would be ready to apply for a license in 2011/12 rather than next season.

Will the NBL be back on Fox Sports next season?

We’re in the middle of broadcast negotiations right now and we have had some very promising discussions with Fox as our incumbent partner. A critical factor to the discussions however is that we need to know which teams will be in next season. Until the new license agreement is finalised and signed by all clubs, it’s impossible to sign off on any new broadcast agreement. So we’re focusing on getting the license agreement across the line so we can move forward and secure our broadcast future.

After so much doubt about whether this season would even go ahead at all, have you been happy with how it’s all unfolded?

Absolutely, it’s been just a fantastic showcase for basketball. We’ve seen the closest competition statistically in our 31-year history, average match attendance is up by 5% across the league with markets like Gold Coast and Wollongong in particular thriving and we saw a huge increase in the number of games shown on TV this season. We’ve had fantastic new imports come in like Tywain McKee, John Gilchrist and Ayinde Ubaka and great young Australians and New Zealanders like Stephen Weigh, Daniel Johnson and Tom Abercrombie really stepping up as star players. It’s just been a fantastic spectacle and a great base on which to build for next season.

Has the revised Finals format been a success?

Yes, I believe it has. By having all rounds be best-of-three series rather than single game eliminations it’s ensured that every team that makes the finals has the benefit of at least one home game. That’s an important reward for the fans and a positive financial boost for those four clubs that qualify for finals. Having all rounds be the same format is also less confusing for the fans and provides some consistency.

Phillin' The Lane: Ogilvy's ups & downs, NBA guys on a high

Basketball Australia's US correspondent Phil Moskowitz wraps another week of Aussie Boomers in action in the United States.

This past week, Vanderbilt students didn’t look forward to just any ordinary Saturday night. The campus had been buzzing about its matchup against #2 Kentucky and the possibility of taking control of the top spot in the SEC.

Come game time, Memorial Gymnasium was rocking; a sea of black and gold. Student’s faces were painted and they were vigorously twirling t-shirts above their heads. The atmosphere was electric, and it continued throughout the entire game.

The game was extremely physical, at times looking like it had turned into an NRL match instead of a basketball game.

The physicality only helped to fuel the fire in this heated rivalry, and in some cases the emotions on both sides resulted in cheap fouls. There were a total of 47 fouls called in the game, and all but one player who stepped on the court that night recorded at least one.

Vanderbilt opened the game going down low to their big Aussie AJ Ogilvy; a strategy that would allow them to control the tempo of the game instead of getting into a fast-break contest with one of the nation’s fastest teams.

For the week Ogilvy averaged 18 points, six rebounds, and 1.5 steals. In their first game verse Ole Miss he posted a season-high 27 points (8-10 FG and 11-13 FT).

The Commodores though got away from feeding Ogilvy the ball and attempted to beat Kentucky from the perimeter. Kentucky is a very good defensive team and didn’t allow Vanderbilt to get many open looks. For the game Vanderbilt shot only 32.1 percent from the field including a pitiful 2-for-20 from 3-point range.

Despite the poor shooting the game saw a number of lead changes and tie games, and at the half Vanderbilt trailed by only two, 27-25.

In a halftime interview, Vanderbilt Coach Kevin Stallings told Erin Andrews of ESPN that it was crucial for his team to “get Ogilvy more touches [in the second half].”

However, the young Vanderbilt guards continued to try and force perimeter shots in the second half.

The score continued to volley back and forth until the last shot of the game, when a Kentucky timeout allowed Vanderbilt to set up a play for Ogilvy down 58-56 with 2.6 seconds left on the clock.

Ogilvy caught a court-length long inbounds pass at the 3-point line, spun towards the basket, dribbled once, and floated a shot towards the basket as the buzzer sounded. As the ball clanked on the rim and fell to the floor, the heart’s of Vanderbilt fans sank; none more than Ogilvy himself who bit the collar of his uniform as he walked off the court.

Ogilvy said after the game, "I had a good look. I can make that shot eight of 10 [times]. Unfortunately, today was one of the two that I missed."

Vanderbilt and Kentucky are the best two teams in the SEC and the Commodores know that they have what it takes to beat Kentucky. Luckily in a few weeks they will hopefully have another shot at it during the SEC Tournament.

Another Aussie’s team who looked good this week was Ater Majok and the UConn Huskies.

The Huskies continued their Jekyll and Hyde season by scoring a huge upset over #3 Villanova (84-75), and later in the week went on to also beat Rutgers 76-58.

Since Coach Calhoun returned from his medical leave of absence UConn is 2-1 and has another pair of big games this week when #7 West Virginia and Louisville visit Jim Calhoun Court in Connecticut.

Majok had a combined 22 minutes of playing time in the games. He had a total of five rebounds, two points, and one block.

It’s hard to say what Coach Calhoun is looking for from Ater. One game he will play single-digit minutes and the next game will see close to twenty. Throughout it though, he has remained a solid inside defender racking up rebounds and blocks.

Also getting back on track this week was Matthew Dellavedova and the St. Mary’s Gaels.

They stopped their two-game losing streak with a 61-49 win over San Diego State.

Delly had a solid game and posted 12 points, six rebounds, six assists, and one steal. He also took care of the ball, only turning it over once as opposed to the uncharacteristic eight he had in the two games the previous week.

In the NBA, last week’s All-Star break looked to be just what the doctor ordered for the Australians.

Andrew Bogut and the Bucks went 2-1 this week with their only loss coming at the hands of David Andersen and the Rockets. The win against the Bucks was Houston’s only win of the week (1-3).

Bogut averaged 14 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.7 blocks, and two assists. He had back-to-back five-block games (Detroit and Charlotte) for the second time this season. He has emerged as both a defensive and offensive threat in the paint this year, and if he keeps playing at this level will lead the Bucks into the playoffs.

Andersen also had a big week. He averaged 8.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and one assist in the four games this week. His best game came in a 104-95 loss to the Utah Jazz where he scored 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 24 minutes.

The 18 points were one shy of his season-high of 19 which came back on November 15th verse the Los Angeles Lakers. He also grabbed a new season-high 11 rebounds verse the Indiana pacers this week.

The Portland Trailblazers also had a solid 2-1 week and moved into 8th place in the Western Conference.

Patty Mills saw a total of 5 minutes on court, including time in back-to-back games for the second time this season.

In his five minutes, Mills recorded four points (2-3 FG), one rebound and one assist. Hopefully, he will continue to produce in these small allotments of time he has been getting.

Also seeing his first court-time in a few weeks was Nathan Jawai. Big Nate had a total of 16 minutes playing-time and recorded four rebounds, one assist, but went 0-2 from the field in Minnesota’s 0-3 week.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Houston v Indiana- 11:45 in the 4th: Andersen grabs season-high 11th rebound

Vanderbilt v Kentucky- 0:00 in the second half: Ogilvy’s game-tying shot bounces out as time expires.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR THIS WEEK

Can UConn pull off another upset of #7 WVU and keep their tournament hopes alive?

Will #20 Vanderbilt have a letdown this week after losing to Kentucky?

Can Andersen have a repeat performance verse the Utah Jazz this week?

The National Basketball League has scored a major recruiting coup with Basketball Australia announcing the appointment of former Port Adelaide Power executive Aaron Flanagan as the NBL’s new General Manager of Sales and Marketing.

Flanagan is an accomplished marketing and sales professional with over a decade’s experience in high profile sporting organisations, having also worked for the Moonee Valley Racing Club and Thoroughbred Racing SA.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Larry Sengstock said the appointment of Flanagan to oversee the identification and growth of commercial opportunities for the NBL was a major step forward for the league.

“We are delighted to welcome someone of Aaron’s calibre to our team as his skill set is unique and perfectly suited to the needs of the NBL,” said Sengstock. “He was selected from a very strong field of candidates for his proven track record of developing and implementing strategy that delivers results in terms of revenue generation.

“As the NBL continues to re-establish itself as a major force on the sporting landscape, Aaron will be charged with capitalising on the league’s growth and driving our evolving commercial programs,” Sengstock added. “It’s an exciting time for the NBL and Aaron has the talent to make a significant contribution to the continued resurgence of the league.”
