The Atlanta Hawks traded the rights to forward-center David Andersen to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday for an undisclosed second-round draft choice, cash and future considerations.

The 6-foot-11 Andersen was a second-round draft choice of the Hawks in 2002. He has spent his professional career in his native Australia and in Europe, most recently in the Spanish League with FC Barcelona.

The Rockets have been scrambling to find a center since the team announced last month that Yao Ming(notes) was out indefinitely with a hairline fracture in his left foot.

Andersen averaged 11.1 points and 4.1 rebounds to help FC Barcelona win the 2008-09 Spanish National Championship and a berth in the Euroleague Final Four. Andersen was a member of Euroleague championship teams with Virtus Bologna (2001) and CSKA Moscow (2006 and 2008).

“David has been a winner with every team he has played for in Europe,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. “He is a very well-rounded player who possesses good offensive skills and a very good shooting touch for a big man.”

Andersen played for Australia in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Well this is some good news, looks like we will have another Aussie to watch in the NBA next season afterall

One would have to think that the Rockets are serious in that they are going to play him.

1. Andersen will not come over otherwise
2. The Rockets gave up alot, they must be wanting him.

I have seen David play very well and very average, will be interesting to see his game in the NBA.

Considering Houston has lost two of their top three players from last year for this season (Artest to Lakers, Ming to injury), and the third player gets injured every other game (McGrady), a second round pick for Houston could be a high second round pick this upcoming draft.

So yes they gave up quite a bit to get Andersen.

What continues to surprise me is that Atlanta's front court isn't awe-inspiring, so why they couldn't use Andersen continues to be a mystery.

I think the back office team at Atlanta has tried to lure him over but not been willing to put enough on the table for him, for that they have kept hiim in the wilderness (in NBA terms anyway). Atlanta stated they wanted him, but Dav did not accept the offer, at least that is what i heard a year or so ago. He has been getting damm good cash in the Euro League, better than what he was offered in the NBA.

Thats the way I read it.

I can't wait to see who they sign as their starting center though! I can't see the Rockets starting either Anderson or Dorsey.

Pretty sure they have about 3 million of their mid-level exception to use after signing Andersen.

Ariza was signed using an injury-exception grant

Radio Interview from basketball.net.au:
http://www.youtube.c...player_embedded

Article in Houston Chronicle:

http://www.chron.com...kn/6531475.html

"Morey previously had attempted to acquire him to be Yao's backup. Atlanta finally was motivated to deal because Andersen was on the verge of a long-term contract that would have ended any possibility of his ever playing in the NBA.

The Mavericks, Grizzles and Rockets were interested, and once more, Leslie Alexander stepped up. The Rockets owner did the same thing on draft night by shelling out $6 million for three draft picks who might not even make the team.

The Rockets will give the Hawks $2 million and a future second-round draft pick, and Andersen will sign a contract believed to be worth $7.5 million over three years."

I hope he does well but when he has played for Aust in the championships and Olympics he has never excelled. If he does get good time and plays a good role Atlanta would be sbewing!

He played well previous to Beijing,Anderson and Bogut both struggled under Gorjian and their preparation was very bad as they had none bas their clubs wouldnt let them train or play with the team in the warm ups, then when they came in they weren't gelled with the team, previous Olympics Anderson starred and even the year before in warm up games with Boomers Anderson dominated.
