What he is not doing though is getting into shape. Out of shape inexperienced players don't get to go on to the court regularly.

Got into the game early today - had 2pt & 2reb in 2 minutes to rest Jefferson going into the end of the 1st quarter. He had 2 offensive boards, had a shot blocked by Kaman and then dunked an offensive board.
Earliest Nate has seen action in a game though. We'll see if he gets out there again...

Offensively he just powered over Joel Pryzbilla for a 'and one' and set a couple of nice screen & rolls - including a nice roll and lay up. Made a mistake in the post where a guard came over to help and took the ball off him (never saw him coming). Just missed an open jumper which he should have probably driven in and got subbed out for it.
Defensively he didn't switch out once in a bad defensive set for the T-Blazers and he is slow reacting in coming over to help out on the drive, but that is to be expected at this stage. He also left Pryzbilla when he shouldn't and ended up getting beaten. Again he needs to get more experience and he will need to get into shape to get that experience.
So in about 5 minutes of time he did about equal good and bad. It will be interesting to see if he gets back into this game at any stage as this hasn't happened in previous games.
Over the last few games Nate has been getting a few meaningful minutes each game which is a huge upgrade on the very occasional garbage time and series of DNP-Coach's Decisions he had last year.
-- update: Nate back in because Jefferson is in foul trouble. Guarding Greg Oden right now - he has to learn when to leave his player and when not to. He'll get a career high in minutes tonight. Blazers are putting it to the Wolves tonight so if it stays this way Nate may be playing a lot tonight.
-- update: Nate in the first half played 11 minutes, 5 pts, 3 reb, 3 fouls and should have been credited with 2 steals but wasn't for some reason. Wolves are sucking badly and are down 17 pts at the half. I bet Nate is sucking wind right now. If he can get into the game into the game sometime in the second half he'll have a chance to play as many minutes tonight in the NBA as he did all last year.
-- update: Nate's in again and could be in for some extra time tonight since the Blazers are down 27.... Could get into double figures with a bit of luck though he just got big time blocked by Travis Outlaw and Al Jefferson is back in for no apparent reason. Career highs in basically every stat tonight. He hasn't yet played more minutes tonight than he did all of last season (16.5 tonight versus 19 in 6 games last year).
-- update: Jefferson shut down for the night. Nate back in with 5 minutes to go and he is into double figures. Looks like he is going to get 20 minutes tonight. Nate up to 13 pts now (and 4 fouls). Make that 15.
Good: 1st game in the NBA with extended minutes. Some nice post moves against quality defenders (Oden, Pryzbilla). Good movement to get open under the basket and be available when his player left to help.
Bad: Defensive lapses. Not enough rebounds. Occasional lapses in concentration and court awareness. A little deliberate in the post. Needs to go up stronger on some drives. He needs to try and dunk the ball rather than finesse it in - failure to do this caused him to get blocked versus being fouled when Outlaw blocked his reasonable move into the paint.
Wolves sucked, Jawai may have earned a few additional minutes tonight.
And whatever happens from this point onwards, Jawai can genuinely say he is a NBA player after tonight.
Final line...
22 minutes, 16 pts, 7-11 fg, 2-3 ft, 6 reb (3 off/3 def), 4 fls, 1 turnover.

Portland won the game easily over Minnesota 116-93, but who cares :-) Nathan Jawai got show what he has got to give in the NBA and that all we care about here at Aussiebball!

"Nathan has impressed the coaching staff from day one," Rambis said. "He's very light on his feet, he can move well, he understands the game. He was doing a lot of his stuff tonight against very good centers in this league."
Not sure if I would go as far as the best player. The Wolves really didn't have a best player last night. Still good praise for Nate and bodes well for some additional court time this next few weeks which should give him a chance to establish some regular playing time before Kevin Love comes back.

Thanks for all this, most of us don't get to see the actual games and it great that you can tell us what is going on.
It seams from your statements that he is a defencive liability, would that be a true statement? Is it simply his extra weight or just a lack of knowledge of the game itself.

Both. Rookies are going to make mistakes, especially defensively in the NBA and this is to be expected and they will hopefully learn from them. Nate is behind most rookies in his learning curve but he is listening and hopefully learning which I hope we can see on the court.
As a young player, Jawai SHOULD be athletic enough to be able to recover from some of these mistakes but his weight means that he is not. So when he makes a mistake it is way more noticeable because he can't recover. Rookies try to recover from their basic mistakes - veterans just don't make the mistake.
One on one on big centers Jawai is not a liability. He can play straight up on a Greg Oden or a Shaq. And he tries hard against the more athletic players. He struggles when it comes to team concepts - rotating, helping, edging screens, blocking shots off the ball and when to do these things. This is where he is a liability right now.

So Nate gets to hear his name as a starter tonight.
Commentators are saying that he probably isn't ready for this at the moment, but that he has shown the potential to be a player and they think he is getting better.
Either way, he is going to get a LOT of minutes tonight. There is truly no one else. Hollins is starting next to him and the only real sub is Percherov who has been up and down this year.
Nate just got an offensive rebound and a 'and one'. Should have dunked it though. Got the freebie.
