He is getting alot of press at the moment, seams like ppl in USA realy think Majok will be something specail.

Ater Majok will be worked into UConn practices on a limited basis. He practiced for the first time Thursday since sustaining a stress fracture of the left tibia a few weeks ago. Majok was to practice 45 minutes, with his workload increasing by the day.

Majok won't be eligible to play until December, so UConn might limit how much he is involved.

"I would have prefered, by today if he didn't have the stress fracture, that I would have had him do everything in the first 10 practices in the regular rotation, then ween him out," coach Jim Calhoun said. "Once we get to games, we won't have time enough to spend as much time with him."

Until UConn gets Majok in uniform, the Huskies will be shorthanded up front with Alex Oriakhi, Gavin Edwards and Charles Okwandu handling the duties. Right now, Stanley Robinson leads the team in blocked shots in practice -- and that's not a good thing.

"We could have a lineup, theoretically, of Gavin, Stanley, Jamal Coombs and two guards -- small and slight," Calhoun said. "When we get Ater back after the first nine games, then we have some legitimate size again. But right now, that's a concern of ours. If we get into a game with LSU, get into a game with whoever it might be, and we run into a size issue, that's going to be a problem. As it plays its way out, you start thinking and preparing for the things that can happen -- injuries, foul situation -- that's one reason we've put the press in."

Asked about tempo, Calhoun said, "I don't know if we can get into a 50-shot game. I think it's got to be a 60-70 shot game where some of our inexperience won't show and some of our quickness will show."

Ater Majok, a 6-10 center originally from the Sudan, is practicing with the team and will be eligible to play his first game Dec. 20 against Central Florida.

"At 6-10 with a 7-foot-7 reach, he's going to make a major splash in our league," head coach Jim Calhoun said.

Quote

“(Neither) of those guys are natural shot-blockers,” Calhoun added. “Our best shot-blockers are Stanley, one, Gavin, two. When Ater gets eligible, he’s probably our best shot-blocker.”

Ah yes, Ater Majok, the 6-11 forward out of Australia. Once he’s eligible to play, Majok will give the Huskies a long, talented, athletic presence up front. But Majok — who just started practicing after battling a stress fracture in his left tibia — won’t be eligible to play until Dec. 20.

“The best of the five new guys would be Ater right now,” Calhoun said. “He’s only played five days, but he’s very talented — more talented than I thought he was. He doesn’t necessarily know how to play yet. He could desperately need a game like this. There was a time when you could play two exhibition games and sit out the rest of the time.”

Well you have to start somewhere...

Ater Majok finished with 1point (0-2 FG) and three rebounds in 17 minutes for in his first game.

Really it was no real surprise since he hasn't played any sort of significant role in a competitive basketball game for almost 3 years. He'll be better for the run and it should get better from this point on.

Good to see him finally get on court and hopefully he now has the sense to stay there for four years. He is listed as a freshman still which should mean he has all his eligibility left. I wasn't sure whether he had screwed himself out of a year with all the issues with his eligibility last year.

Game 2 for Majok - 5 pts, 4 reb, 2blks in 18 minutes. Better, though the competition is lighter than he will soon be up against.

From AP:
"Ater Majok, UConn's 6-foot-11 freshman forward, had a better night than his one-point debut against UCF. Majok, who became eligible to play this week, finished with five points, four rebounds and three of UConn's 16 blocked shots."

OK - Majok has now played 4 games and you can see several things...

- He is VERY raw. He has a long way to go in terms of actually playing a game of basketball.
- The speed of the game is beyond him just now. That is something most people adapt to over time
- He is very long. But he doesn't ever appear to actually jump much.
- He doesn't so much as run down court - it is more of a loping motion.
- Defensively he is useful because he is REALLY long. That is worth mentioning twice.

There is no definite conclusions that can be drawn just let from his play, with the exception that if he has any sense, that he needs to stay at UConn for all four years of college.

He does look like a bit of a freak, and when its college ball you can talk about long term upside. End of the day you don't get minutes at a college like Uconn unless you can see light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm not sure what else to say at the moment

He had a shocker against Cincinnati last night, in 20 minutes he had 3 turnovers, 3 fouls, no points and 2 rebounds

I am still totally unsure of what of make of Majok.

I am not sure we will know until at least is junior year how much of a player he is truly going to be. Assuming he stays at Uconn of course.

And that means assuming that whoever is 'running' him has his best interests at heart - which they clearly did not the past off season or the past year.

I saw this guy properly for the first time today on espn and he is impressive. He has unbelievable defensive upside some of the blocks he goes for will really inspire his team. The athleticism will turn many heads.

He got his most minutes of the season on the weekend

Quote

The Huskies got another strong performance from freshman forward Ater Majok (Sydney, Australia). Majok scored six points, blocked a career-best five shots in a career-high 32 minutes of game action.

He is certainly getting minutes and as long as they don't ask him to score, he is doing well. 5 blks in the last game is a good haul.

3 additional years of college will hopefully produce some semblance of an offensive game.

Found this link on youtube: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=LekI2Dn7Nso

He looks like the next in a long line of defensive centers from UCONN that end up playing in the NBA because they defend well. His offense seems limited right now but it does look like he has a touch. I like the fact he dove on the floor for the loose ball that led to the 1st ally opp dunk and then he was on the floor again. He plays with a lot of energy. He is skinny and long as whatever. Looks like he will be a 4 year guy but could be really good with about 10-15 kgs of weight.

Well Uconn does seam to be persisting with him, he is getting around 15 minutes a game and I am not to sure why?

At the same time the Connecticut Huskies have been playing well as a team of late and could even by a chance to make the NCAA, especially with their win over #8 ranked West Virginia

basically Uconn have about 4 monster Fowards-Centre who they rotate to dominate teams defensively. Majok is one of those. The reason he gets game time is his rebounding and blocking ability which the coach knows at any stage can inspire the team.
