National Basketball League clubs will have to wait until next week to find out if they will be part of the competition next season.

The NBL was due to make an announcement this week, but a spokesman says the Commissioner is still finalising licence agreements.

Most of the interest revolves around bids for new teams in Sydney and Brisbane, while the Cairns Taipans are still working to meet the league's financial requirements.

I'm still not sure Sydney works for me, unless they have some new model that guarantees a fan base e.g. attached to the Sydney Swans or something. I'm not sure how a Sydney team can survive.

Brisbane and Cairns have a great supporter base's, its a shame Cairns did not have a good season this year.

I'd actually like to see a second team from New Zealand. Imagine a NZ derby game in the NBL. Maybe even a team that plays in various cities e.g. Wellington, Christchurch etc

The NBL are so insipid, why is the deadline now,its the start of the playoffs ,the new season isn't planned or a start date is not planned,3/4 of the teams are still getting sponsors and finalizing play lists for next season, all players are free agents after this season ..
Teams need more time its plain simple...

The relaunch has no date or no data for clubs.

you are basically signing up to the unkown with no plan or no team!

This is why the Dragons walked away from this so called league.

I hate the NBL enough but this just makes me shake my head...

I have an idea lets over shaddow the playoff series of the first relaunched season with more BS and uncertainty about the league... great idea
have clubs and players worring about whats happeining next season rather then the playoffs, and those who arent in the playoffs enjoying a break or watching the playoffs or applying their trade overseas..
So for those heading overseas to refine their skills this announcement at this time with this much uncertanty would almost be a "hey well your already OS, why not try and stay there as we the NBL are keen to fuk you around for the next few months"

WELL ,sports tnight reporting that Kings will be back next season,i know from a league statement that the Kings are putting in for a license next season but the league is in he process and would like to make sure its done conservertly and properly.

I personally think that the NBL would prefer the Kings and the second Melbourne team along with a Brisbane team to enter all on the same season,.

This would mean the season after next as the second Melbourne team is not yet ready for the application and neither is the Brisbane team.

This process could all be sped up but the NBL has these ridiculous deadlines ...like this week..

Surely the applications shouldn't be due until April at least, this is the relaunch of 3 teams and Cairns ,also the mini revamp of the NBL.

Anyone know who is behind the Sydney bid? Hopefully it is not the same losers who have screwed up NBL clubs for years in the city.

Sydney is a market with potential for a management team that knows what they are doing. That means no involvement from anyone previously involved.

i know for a fact that its is the guy that was the majority share holder of coles/myer or Grace Bro's he sold all his shares last year and is now one of Australia's richest men.

that is who actually brought the license according to the media circle at games.

yeah sure is..

Basketball Australia is backing the team with 10% ownership,Knox and Nunawading are in as part owners ,Dandenong said NO and Sandringham yet to decide but likely a NO.

Its all very vague atm but this is the word.

Also Mark Cowen looking for a partner in Dragons but doesn't look likely..

Unfortunately the Dragons are dead which sucks as they started to get a good following and rivalry with the Tigers. It will be a whole new team 90% on that

yeah us Dragons are buried unless Cowan gets a Billionaire partner to put in the 70%.

its safe to say we are gone for good.

A totally new team that won't fold as its backed by the local clubs is probably a better thing.

How can BA back the team with 10% ownership? Will BA back every team with 10% ownership?

yeah i worded wrong...

they are backing them by having local comps or clubs ran by Bball Oz backing the team.

so infact its not directly Basketball Australia its the local associations.

I think i will wait till they release details before i get into something i cant answer.
