In the wake of last Friday’s thrilling conclusion to the National Basketball League (NBL) season, where the Perth Wildcats took the title over the Wollongong ahm Hawks, the nominees in four of the major award categories for the 2009/10 NBL season have been revealed.
The players nominated for the Most Improved Player, Best Sixth Man, Rookie of the Year and Best Defensive Player awards have been announced. The eventual winners will be named at the 2010 NBL and WNBL Awards Dinner in Melbourne at Crown Casino this Friday night.
Each of the NBL’s eight teams were able to nominate a maximum of two players from their own roster for each of those four award categories. In all, four players were nominated by their club for Rookie honours, 15 for Best Sixth Man, 15 for Best Defensive Player and 12 for Most Improved.
Voting for the award winners was conducted at the conclusion of the regular season, with the Head Coach, one Assistant Coach and one Captain from each team having the chance to cast 3-2-1 votes for their preferred choices. Voters were not allowed to vote for players from their own team in the final balloting process. The player who receives the highest vote total when all ballots are counted will be declared the winner.
Other awards that will be announced this Friday night include the Andrew Gaze Trophy for the NBL’s Most Valuable Player, the All-NBL First, Second and Third Teams, Referee of the Year and the Lindsay Gaze Trophy for Coach of the Year. None of these other awards required clubs to nominate players.
