Well the news reports are all over the web

e.g. http://wwos.ninemsn....aspx?id=1029069

The statements from Bogut : "I think I'm a 50-50 chance for the world championships," Bogut, in Los Angeles where the Bucks had a disappointing 101-93 loss to the lowly LA Clippers, told AAP on Wednesday.

"I'm not going to make a decision until the end of the season.

"My back has been up and down.

"There's been days when I'm great and days where I feel horrible."

The statements from Hammond, Bucks GM:
"We are going to support Andrew as he goes through this process, but we do have concerns," Hammond told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"... We know the importance of the world championships and the importance to Australian basketball.

"Not trying to be selfish throughout this process, but to a certain extent we do have to watch out for our own best concerns here."

The statements from Scott Skiles, Bucks Coach:

"It's a sensitive subject because you're dealing with almost a patriotism-type issue, people playing for their country," Skiles told the newspaper.

"On the other hand, Andrew's injury was an injury from overuse.

"We're trying to impress on Andrew the importance (he has to the franchise) and he understands it.

"From our seat, we want Andrew working on his game and staying healthy in the summertime.

"That's a big priority."

Look if he's back is not good than fair enough, but if he is fit I think he'd be silly not to go. He will only gain personally from the experience and at the end of the day the Bucks are still going to pay him next season. Bogut as a brand in Australia is gaining and he is starting to get some press in the mainstream media, a good showing at the Worlds and you will soon see Bogut jerseys everywhere and he may find some more sponsorship contracts at the end of it all.

End of the day, I never heard these sorts of comments about Michael Redd when he was going to play for Team USA. Oh but the the GM and Coach would not dare to stop a player playing for Team USA, so why is it different for Bogut. I recall them actually saying that playing (he was a bench warmer in truth) for Team USA helped his game. Furthermore, the NBA has throw its full support behind the World Championships as they understand it helps them promote the NBA brand globally, they would surely like to see Bogut wearing an Australian jersey in August, don't be surprised if Stern gives Hammond a call to at least stop the public comments on the issue.

Lets not forget that it was the junior national team that propelled Bogut to the world stage, and if I do recall, Bogut did make commitments early on in his career that he would attended the World Championship and Olympics, but would negate other tournaments. I will look to see were this story goes, but as with anything with Boguts name attached to it, the game of basketball in Australia affected.

Health is going to be a big part of it. If you go back to the start of the season there was a lot of discussion on exactly how much Bogut was going to be able to play this year. There was even some discussion that he might not play at all this year.

It may also depend on how deep the Bucks go in the playoffs. They go a couple of tough 7 game series in and I suspect he may withdraw.

Oh and just like EPL and la Liga teams whine about their players playing for their country, NBA teams have been whining about their players (especially international players and especially Mark Cuban) playing in Euro Championships and Worlds/Olympics.

I have heard the Lakers complain about Kobe playing and Miami in particular complains because Dwayne Wade seems to get hurt a lot. But they complain less about the USA players in the Olympics because they know the strain is not as much for them. For example Bogut, Gasol, Ginobli, Nowitski and a few others will play every available minute they can for their national team and they will go hard every minute they are out there because to them this is every bit as important (if not more important) than the NBA. The USA team is so deep it doesn't have to play anyone 40 minutes and in fact wont play anyone that much - and the players don't quite care at the level some of the international players do.
