Good stuff. Lets see what Sunday brings.
Great video interview - well worth a listen -
Be thankful for the salary cap.
Posted 2 Jul 2010
We should all thank David Stern.
Without the salary cap we would be looking at ALL the best players available probably being in New Jersey and a totally lopsided competition. Also the league would be in total financial ruin as some idiot owner would inflate salaries beyond belief (see Major League Baseball for how stupid it can get).
It has worked out so that even if Miami manage to sign 3 of the max contract guys, they will have to fill the roster with drafted rookies and minimum contract players (you can always sign a minimum contract player even if over the cap). One injury and they wont have the depth to be able to win long term. Actually they might not have the depth even if they don't have injuries in that scenario.
Hugely risky as well, as this would be the scenario for the next 5 years no matter what happens. One knee injury and it could get ugly quickly.
BTW - if I was Miami I would 100% do this. They'll sell out season tickets, the excitement in the city would be huge, and even if it only works once, a title is totally worth the possible down years. -
Who's gonna play for Australia Boomers in Turkey?

Maybe is the best answer to that. Boomers team is going to be all about who is available, and who is in the best shape and I haven't heard anything about that. If Jawai is not in shape he could very easily miss out especially with Luke Nevill also in the mix. It is great we have some awesome size available.
Also Ogilivy brings the ability to back up both the C and PF spot which Jawai and Loughton probably don't.
Right now (with Bogut out), I see the best lineup (assuming available)we can put out there as:
Maric
Andersen
Neilsen
Newley
Mills
---------
Ingles
Dellavedova
Worthington
Barlow
All other spots are really up for grabs.
You probably only take 2 of Loughton/Jawai/Nevill/Ogilivy
You would also like an athletic scoring SF like a Liam Rush and another backup guard.
Man, I will say it is VERY nice to be writing about really, really good players who could easily miss out. It hasn't been like that for the Boomers for some time.
There are going to be a number of teams without their star NBA players at this world champs - we roll out a full strength team minus Bogut and we should have extremely high expectations. -
And on to the draftl....
Posted 19 Jun 2010
This years NBA draft is a little strange. We have a number of players who have come out because they are worried about a work stoppage in the NBA after next season and the fact they might not get paid until 2013 if they don't come out now. Also the rookie scale is likely to be a serious discussion in the collective bargaining agreement so there is a lot of uncertainty about what they might be paid anyway.
That said there are going to be some real winner and losers in this draft:
Winners:
Wizards and 76ers picking one and two. John Wall is a physical basketball freak who clearly loves the game. Evan Turner plays like Duane Wade. There is a lot to like and both should step in and start on day one.
Losers:
Those drafting from 3-20. This year is full of long, explosive players with major flaws and questions with their skills, attitudes or both. Many are years away from contributing - of they ever do. A couple barely have any basketball skills at all besides being athletic. There are gems here still - Gordon Hayward, Eric Bledsoe and Patrick Patterson are players and it is safe to say will be solid NBA players - you'll be OK if your favourite team drafts them. Players with attributes such as;
Demarcus Cousins - reported to be at 20% body fat and pleased because that was less than he was.
Greg Monroe - turned up about every other college game.
Ed Davis - well his dad was a good NBA player anyway. Basketball skills - not many
Cole Aldrich - the next Eric Montross including hair cut
Al-Farouq Aminu - massively athletic... offensively you worry when he has to make a layup or dribble or defend
Solomon Alabi - very tall. That's it.
Paul George - shoots it every time he touches it. Because he can, not because he is all that great at it.
Not Big Winners, But Could Work Out:
With the huge collection of non-basketball athletes, this leaves players who can actually play the game available at the bottom end of the first round and into the second. Some GM is going to look like a genius by having some player literally just fall into their lap who ends up being a real player. Maybe more than one.
Guys like Dominique Jones (who can just flat out score) and Greivis Vasquez (who can explode and can really shoot) are examples of what you can find at the end of the first round. They have a defined NBA skill which is ready to be used now. Also players like Stanley Robinson and Quintien Poindexter who developed through college and have solid all round games which will translate into the NBA.
Australians
AJ Ogilivy wont be drafted unless it is at the very, very end of the draft by a team looking to keep his rights while he plays in Europe. He wasn't even invited to the NBA combine. AJ may catch on either via a big World Championships or a very good Summer League.I was hoping he was going to get an opportunity to show what he really has away from the non-coaching of Stallings at Vandy, but apparently not. -
Quick Bogut update..

Cast off, party with Squad 6...
http://www.journalti...1cc4c03286.html
"Bucks center Andrew Bogut flew from Australia to Milwaukee the other day and had the cast on his right arm removed. Bogut then hosted a spirited party Tuesday night for approximately 70 members of his highly-entertaining "Squad 6’’ cheering squadron at Fanatics, a Milwaukee sports bar. Bogut not only picked up the tab but he spent more than three hours mingling with "Squad 6’’ members.
Bogut said he was delighted by "Squad 6’’ in its inaugural season and has hopes of expanding membership to around 150 for next season."
